Pick Me Up Theatre presents Shakespeare in Love
With a top notch cast of the county’s finest, costumes sourced from the best theatres including the RSC and musicians with a host of authentic instruments – including an actual hurdy gurdy – this is not a production to be missed.
“I would stay asleep all my life if I could dream myself into a company of players”
Lee Hall’s stage adaptation of Shakespeare in Love, the Oscar-winning film written by Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman, is a rollicking celebration of the joys of theatre.
It’s a love story about struggling young playwright Will Shakespeare and a feisty, free-thinking young noblewoman who helps him overcome his writer’s block and becomes his muse.
And it’s a love letter to the stage itself – bursting with humour, wonderful characters and theatrical allusions.
Viola de Lesseps is Will’s greatest admirer and will stop at nothing – including breaking the law and dressing as a boy actor – to appear in his next play.
Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola quickly blossoms, inspiring him to write his greatest romantic masterpiece – Romeo and Juliet.
Funny and moving in equal measures, the stage version of Shakespeare in Love was acclaimed as “riotously enjoyable” and a show that “makes you feel grateful to be alive” when it premiered in London in 2014.

Shakespeare in Love is on at Theatre@41 Monkgate, York, from April 1-9.

Theatre@41 is set to welcome top stand-up comedian Olga Koch as part of a new Autumn Season.
Edinburgh Comedy Award Nominee Olga announces her 2021 UK tour dates today (Friday June 9 2021) with her third show Homecoming. And tickets are now on sale for her York performance on October 8.
“What does it mean to belong and where is home?”… With her new passport in hand, Homecoming will see Olga try to figure out who on earth she is as an immigrant and certified teen drama queen!
Amidst a wave of acclaim and accolades, Olga was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with her debut, FIGHT – a multimedia extravaganza that took her audience through the making of modern Russia. The show went on to have a successful 2019 UK tour and has since been aired as a special for BBC Radio 4 and is being adapted as a TV sitcom.
Olga’s If/Then debuted at Edinburgh before touring the UK and was nominated for Best Show at Leicester Comedy Festival – it is also now being developed for television.
And talking TV, Olga’s many appearances include BBC’s QI, Mock The Week, King Gary, The New Comedy Show and Channel 4’s Sparks. The busy comedian has also recently released a podcast with BBC Sounds called Tech Tech Boom and her very own BBC Radio 4 show.
Olga said: “After various attempts to bring this show to life, I (a standup comedian who hopefully hasn’t forgotten how to do standup) cannot wait to bring this feel-good extravaganza to an audience (who hopefully hasn’t forgotten how to laugh).”
Theatre@41 is delighted to welcome top comedy star Sara Barron to York as part of her UK tour.
The Monkgate venue is set to host Sara’s critically-acclaimed show Enemies Closer. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Thursday July 22 2021) but if you book through the theatre@41 box office you can get special presale tickets today! Tickets available from the Theatre@41Monkgate ticket website
A powerhouse live act and fast rising star, Sara’s previous shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and multiple runs in London’s Soho Theatre have sold out to major critical and audience acclaim. Blisteringly funny and with no-holds-barred, in Enemies Closer Sara examines kindness, meanness, ex-boyfriends, current husbands, all four of her remaining friends, and two of her twelve enemies…
Sara Barron is one of the fastest-rising comedians of her generation. Since her 2018 debut in Edinburgh, she’s appeared on shows including the BBC’s Live at the Apollo, Would I Lie to You? and Frankie Boyle’s New World Order. She was nominated for ‘Best Newcomer’ at both the Edinburgh Comedy Awards and at the Chortle Awards in 2018, as well as receiving rave reviews from publications including The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Evening Standard and The Scotsman.
Sara’s further television credits include 8 Out of 10 Cats (C4), Hypothetical (DAVE), Richard Osman’s House of Games (BBC), Alan Davies’ As Yet Untitled (DAVE), Roast Battle (Comedy Central) and Hello, America (Quibi). On radio, her credits include appearances on The News Quiz, The Now Show, and Woman’s Hour on Radio 4. As a writer, Sara has published two essay collections, People are Unappealing and The Harm in Asking. Her writing has also featured in Vanity Fair and on This American Life.
Sara Barron said: “As an American comic, I can’t be like, “YeeHAW this tour is gonna be AWESOME!” without forcing my UK audience into a full-body cringe. BUT. May I just say…. I think it *will* be awesome, but I’m saying it in an “I-live-in-Britain-and-buy-all-my-bras-from-M&S” kinda way. The UK comedy scene is one of my great beloveds – alongside crafty passive-aggression – so touring this show is truly the fulfilment of a dream. SO. Come if you dig an artful rant. Stay at home if think you’re “a positive person”. I hope to see you there!”

Well known worldwide, Foreigner and Journey are giants Adult Orientated Rock, filling stadiums and defying fashions since the ’70s.
Longtime Sabb fans were BLOWN AWAY when this trib appeared last time, “The guitarist and singer have it absolutely nailed” / “Reminded me of seeing them first time around” / “Amazing booking, best tribute I’ve seen for years!”
This is a mad and brilliant act! There’s never been anything quite like THE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS, a groundbreaking fusion of traditional Scottish music and rock/pop anthems which they proudly call “Bagrock”.
Collectively BROTHER STRUT have played on sales of half a billion with Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock & Amy Winehouse. Together they’re one of the tightest and funkiest soul and blues bands around.
From an Aug 1976 Melody Maker advert, and the Oct London debut supporting Throbbing Gristle, CHELSEA are still one of the classic punk acts, and debut single Right To Work rightly regarded a classic – covered by Die Toten Hosen and went platinum. Gene’s comment? “I don’t give a damn”.

After gaining a loyal following in the North through years of gigging, sessions on BBC Introducing and being tipped as ‘ones to watch’, BLIND EYE are back after a short hiatus, fresh-faced and ready to blow you away with their unique brand of Alt Rock.
Back by overwhelming demand!!
Formed 2011, SCOPYONS are the definitive tribute to the great German rockers. It was only after a solid nine months rehearsing before the first shows, but they were quickly acknowledged and Scorpions guitarist Matthias Jabs invited them to play at the opening of his Munich store, MJ Guitars. And it has gone from strength to strength from there!
Since the arrival of Jesse Wood on guitar in April 2014, REEF are back stronger and better than ever, a live album recorded over two sell out nights at St.Ives Guildhall mixing a set of inspired new songs with all the loved classics.
As close as it gets …
One of the longest-established Smiths tributes and boy is that obvious every time they play here.
Thrash metal originals EXODUS have battled every kind of adversity over the past 30 years and used it all as fuel to stoke an ever-raging fire. Short-lived trends, line-up shifts, label conflicts, even the death of founding vocalist Paul Baloff couldn’t stop the beast.
Faroese viking metallers TYR return for what will be another York sell-out. Marking the end of the Jorvik Festival, these shows are always a riot of much beer-drinking, head banging and general mayhem. Nothing new there, then…
The UK & Europe’s No.1 tribute to the biggest-selling solo artist of all time; the global superstar who took traditional country and bluegrass, mixed it with honky tonk, blues and rock and shifted over 100 million albums in the process.
In a rare break from his day job as the bass player with rock legends Status Quo, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards will tour the UK and Europe again in 2016 with his side band RHINO’S REVENGE.
Renowned for an action-packed pyrothechnic-fuelled explosion of a show, LIMEHOUSE LIZZY continue to keep the spirit of Celtic rock icon Philip Lynott and his band Thin Lizzy alive, well and dominating stages worldwide.
THE LAKE POETS aka Sunderland’s Martin Longstaff; of whom the words ‘haunting’ and ‘beautiful’ are not only wasted but simply a million miles short of describing just how haunting and beautiful music can be.
Inspired with blues-rock and virtuoso playing BEN POOLE is the new boy in town, the new up-and-coming UK guitarist and one of the finest to have emerged for years. Having already played with, and acclaimed by, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore and John Mayall, at just twenty seven years of age it appears that there is no stopping him.
THE BASTARD SONS are a fearsome set of blighters; not so much begat as taken roughly from behind. Bad medicine and bad news all round.
Formed ’84 and FM were quickly on the road with the likes of Meat Loaf, Tina Turner, Foreigner, Gary Moore, Status Quo and the white-hot Bon Jovi on their
“Slippery When Wet” tour.

We like THE GOODNIGHT LADIES. In fact, we like every band on this bill but first things first… Nathan Foley’s ex-Valmores “… grungy, criminal rock and roll, wouldn’t be out of place in the background of a torture scene in a Tarantino film” – York Calling. We agree, which is why they were such a hit supporting The Graveltones here in 2015.
The imitators are many but THE FEDERALS tore up York’s rule book and defined fuzzed-up f***-off garage. No Costa and Ginsters in this pit stop, just burning fuel and rubber. No dipsticks, no oily rags; just high octane MC5/Ramones petrol power and they stood above the rest with bloody great tunes as well. TRANSISTOR 1969 live at Proud, Camden – still mind-blowing…
